Our History

Since 1980, we’ve been driven by our belief that every Washingtonian should have the opportunity to thrive.

We were born from humble beginnings on 14th Street NW as a safe space for children to access after-school meals. Today, we support strong children, strong families, and strong communities by operating nationally accredited education programs beginning at birth; fighting for food justice and increasing access to healthy meals and fresh produce for over 20,000 residents; and promoting family success through our no-cost community store and engagement programs.

In 2023, we are working harder than ever to support our neighbors in the face of COVID-19 and the many other challenges affecting D.C. families.

With the rapidly changing landscape of our city, we remain dedicated to building seats for everyone at the table, ensuring Washingtonians can thrive in their home city.

We continue to believe that by coming together at the table for an exchange of ideas, nourishment, and solutions, real change will happen.
