Food and nutrition have been at the heart and soul of Martha’s Table since we opened our doors in 1980. Our daily Martha’s Table Markets, monthly Community Markets, network of monthly Joyful Food Markets, and McKenna’s Wagon aim to increase access to healthy food and support children and their families in making healthy choices.

In January 2015, Martha’s Table, in partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank and DC Health, launched Joyful Food Markets to increase access to and encourage consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables east of the Anacostia River.
Joyful Food Markets are pop-up monthly markets held in elementary schools in Wards 7 and 8 in D.C. School families are invited to shop at no cost for a variety of beautiful high-quality produce, including bananas, apples, greens, and sweet potatoes, as well as basic shelf staples such as pasta and beans.
School cafeterias and gymnasiums are transformed into joyful environments with music, dancing, and colorful tables filled with baskets of fresh produce and healthy non-perishable food. In addition, our markets feature kids’ activities and recipe samples designed to get children excited about healthy eating and cooking.

The markets have been a blessing to our community. We have made changes in our eating habits and have started cooking more at home…so that we are able to save money.
I am surprised at the impact the market has had on my family…the entire family and everyone have begun to try to incorporate new fruits and vegetables into our diets.
The market is very helpful to the community. The program increases the community’s access to fresh fruit and vegetables.
Robin, a Ward 8 resident, mother of seven, and DC Public Schools bus driver, was first exposed to the markets through her children, who would bring home fresh fruits and vegetables from school every month. Since her initial visit, Robin has become a regular attendee, taking particular interest in cooking demonstrations, which help her and her children learn different ways of cooking, such as baking vegetables.
“We haven’t had a microwave since it broke three or four months ago—but we don’t need one. We have better eating habits now,” she says. Since altering her family’s diet, Robin has noticed weight loss in her children and a drop in her own blood pressure. “To see the smiles on their faces, and to change our eating habits,” she says as she considers her children, “…it’s the best thing that ever happened to us.”
BankMcKenna’s Wagon, Martha’s Table’s mobile food service, rolls out 7 days a week, 365 days a year to feed hundreds of DC neighbors who may be experiencing housing instability or hunger at two downtown locations. Volunteers stop at the following locations and serve hot, fresh meals, as well as sandwiches, homemade muffins, fruit, and refreshments.
