Soaring High Together: The Evolution and Impact of the Global Passport Program

How it Started vs. How it’s Going

What started as a single trip has blossomed into an essential program that elevates high-school students—ages 14 to 19—with enriching experiential learning opportunities that extend far beyond their immediate neighborhoods. Since the first trip to Atlanta in April 2023, the Global Passport Program has taken 200 students on 10 remarkable journeys, including a recent adventure to beautiful San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The foundation of this program lies in community engagement. In 2020, we organized a panel of respected Southeast D.C. leaders to help us develop a strategic plan that truly reflected the needs and aspirations of local youth and their families. Through meaningful conversations, parents and teens highlighted the importance of exploring beyond their local communities, inspiring us to create a program that builds bridges through travel.

The results of these experiences are undeniable. Research from the Student and Youth Travel Association (STYA) reveals that youth travel increases curiosity and willingness to learn in 60% of participants, while over half report a boost in self-esteem and confidence. These insights align with the stories we hear from teens—stories of newfound independence, important life skills, and lasting friendships formed during their travels.

One Global Passport student reflected,

“The trip impacted my life in a positive way because I learned that there’s more to life than just being in a confined space and being in one spot.” -Tatiyana R.

We’ve seen our participants thrive not just in their travels but also in their personal growth. The Global Passport Program includes mentorships, tutoring opportunities, and creative outlets such as art therapy for the student. The teen lounge buzzes with energy, students are developing meaningful friendships and supporting one another—creating a community that extends far beyond our trips. Global Passport Ambassador Kenisha Johnson has had the opportunity to experience firsthand the growth and evolution of the program, as she attended both the first trip in April 2023 and the latest trip to Puerto Rico.

Global Passport Ambassador Kenisha Johnson shares,

“Our youth already need a larger space! What started as a global passport trip has evolved into a dynamic youth development program. We proudly provide a Barbershop and Beautician course and plan to create some exciting volunteer opportunities for the teens. It is incredibly uplifting and heartwarming to witness many students from our early trips getting accepted into college. Their success truly exemplifies our mission and commitment to nurturing young potential!”

As We Look Ahead

In the spirit of growth and inclusivity, we recognize that our journey is just beginning. Dedicated staff members such as Youth Development Manager Rachel Angle, Afterschool Programs Assistant Melanee Williams, and many others—work tirelessly to ensure that each teen feels supported as they embark on these life-changing adventures. Together, we celebrate every achievement, from college acceptances to the creation of volunteer opportunities within our community.

As we look ahead, we invite you to join us in celebrating the Global Passport Program and its essential role in youth development in our city. We rely on your support—whether through participation in our events, sharing information with peers, or simply reaching out to our team for more details. Every small effort contributes to fostering a brighter future for our youth.

Let’s come together to uplift D.C. teens, ensuring they have access to opportunities that inspire them to dream big and explore the world. Your involvement can make a meaningful difference, helping us continue to expand the Global Passport Program and serve even more young people in our community.
