MLK /Day of Service

/ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. devoted his life to service and justice. At Martha’s Table, we carry his legacy forward by fostering community care and connection year-round. Dr. King once asked, “What are you doing for others?” His words remind us that service is more than a moment; it’s a lifelong commitment to making a positive difference.

This year, we’ll be coming together to make a meaningful impact through a pop-up market, revitalization projects, and more.

 

Frederick Douglass Community Center: Space Refresh
Help us revitalize this vital neighborhood hub! Volunteers will assist with general organization, assembling new office furniture, and setting up the computer lab to ensure a functional, welcoming tech space for the community.

 

Covenant Baptist Church: Pantry & Infrastructure
Support the expansion of local food resources. This project involves hands-on work, including the installation of new flooring, positioning industrial refrigeration for food storage, painting pantry shelving, and assembling furniture for the community room.

 

Martha’s Outfitters: Healthy Foods Pop-Up
Get hands-on with healthy food access! Join us at our Martha’s Outfitters location for a special pop-up market along the 21st Annual MLK Holiday DC Parade route. Volunteers will help distribute ingredients for a healthy meal to our neighbors, supporting our commitment to community nutrition and healthy food access.

 

Howard University: MLK Jr. Day Game Classic & Food Drive  
Come out to the Annual MLK Day Classic as the Howard Bison take on the Morehouse Maroon Tigers on Monday, January 19, at 4 p.m. Rooted in Howard University’s enduring commitment to academic distinction, leadership, and social responsibility, this matchup honors Dr. King’s vision by uniting competition with purpose. Fans are encouraged to donate non-perishable goods to benefit Martha’s Table.
