As the government shutdown entered its 14th day, President Barack Obama spent some time away from the front lines of the budget battles on Monday to visit Martha’s Table, a D.C. nonprofit that helps low-income and homeless families. Many of those volunteering there are furloughed federal workers. The president donned an apron and helped with making the sandwiches, getting his hands dirty.

Remarks by the President at Martha’s Table

President Obama visited Martha’s Table, which helps 1,100 people a day deal with the immediate effects of poverty and finds long-term solutions with education, nutrition and family support services. President Obama also addressed the government shutdown saying, “this afternoon I am going to once again urge them to open the government and urge them to make sure that the United States government is paying its bills.”

In January, the board of Martha’s Table surprised the philanthropic world when they announced that Patty Stonesifer, the founding CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, would become its next president and CEO. Ms. Stonesifer also served as the Chair of the White House Council for Community Solutions, appointed in 2010 by President Obama. In 2012, she completed her term as the Chair of the Smithsonian Institution Board of Regents. This is part two of an exclusive Borderstan feature about Patty Stonesifer’s new role.
