Picture this: Music playing, kids laughing, the smell of fresh fruits and veggies in the air, and families tasting nutritionist-backed recipes featuring produce from that afternoon’s choice-based market. Volunteers (hint: that’s YOU!) share tips on bringing fresh produce into everyday meals, and market leaders answer questions, offer easy meal ideas, and hand out recipe cards so families can take a little of the market magic home.
Every month, Martha’s Table brings 50 schools across Wards 7 and 8 to life through vibrant Joyful Food Markets. Families take home healthy, fresh produce at no cost while connecting with neighbors, discovering new foods, and celebrating healthy choices together.
Volunteers are the spark that brings Joyful Food Markets to life! They welcome families, lead cooking demos, guide kids through fun activities, share tips about fresh produce, and make everyone feel at home. Every smile, every recipe shared, and every moment of guidance turns a simple grocery pickup into a joyful community celebration.
Joyful Food Markets thrive because of the people who show up and show out! Every warm smile, excitable greeting, and tasty recipe shared helps families feel supported, seen, and celebrated. – Uneka King, Director of Volunteer Engagement
Volunteering is flexible and fun! You can sign up for a single market shift to experience the energy firsthand, or return again and again to help families discover new foods and healthy meal ideas. Whether you’re helping with setup, distributing produce, or sharing knowledge, your time makes a real difference. Sign up for a Joyful Food Market shift, here!
Lettuce adopt a market! Friends, neighbors, coworkers, service groups, faith communities, student organizations, parent teacher associations, local businesses, and professional networks can all “adopt” a market for the school year. Each school typically hosts eight monthly markets, and teams commit to a minimum of two of those markets. Volunteers show up once a month for a 2.5-hour shift to help with setup, distribute produce, run activities, answer questions, and welcome families. Teams can also table to share resources that directly benefit families. Adopting a market builds stronger connections, supports healthy food access, and creates meaningful experiences for everyone involved.
Contact Uneka King, Director of Volunteer Engagement, at uking@marthastable.org to learn more about available market locations, tabling opportunities (must directly benefit families), recognition benefits, and more!
