Strong Families, Strong Futures: A Community Growing Together

Three years ago, a group of new mothers from across Washington, DC came together through the Strong Families, Strong Futures program. Many were balancing newborn care, bills, and the uncertainty of what was to come next. Today, in the program’s final year, their stories reveal transformation built on trust, learning, and the power of community.

“I feel financially stable… if I had an unexpected expense like a flat tire, I know I’ll be able to cover it,” one mother shared. Her words reflect a broader narrative throughout the program. The majority of participants have achieved key milestones, including paying bills on time, building savings, and securing stable housing. Many have moved from worrying about how to make ends meet to feeling confident about the future.

Financial stability was only the beginning. With training and coaching, mothers strengthened their career paths and rediscovered their confidence. “I got a new job with a seven-dollar hourly pay increase. The program equipped me to handle expenses better.” Another shared, “Entrepreneurship workshops stood out most because they covered marketing, branding, and business structure, aligning with my interests,” one participant shared.

Through LIFT DC and Martha’s Table, mothers practiced interview skills, learned to tailor resumes, and explored career goals that fit their families. “The training helps me put together a resume for the job that I was seeking…they were showing us the ways to do that,” a participant explained. Another reflected, “I feel more confident and ready to rejoin the workforce, and also redoing my resume was very encouraging.”

As confidence grew, so did community. Participants described the program as a sisterhood. “We have cried together, laughed together, shared stories together that helped one another. This sense of belonging extended into everyday life. The group gatherings, tea parties, and family outings became safe spaces filled with joy, laughter, and encouragement. “You feel like you belong,” a mother shared.

“At the heart of Strong Families, Strong Futures is connection. This work is about listening to mothers and walking alongside them. They already have the strength. We are simply creating the space for that brilliance to shine.” Ra’ChelleDennis, Family Engagement Specialist

The program’s impact extended beyond finances and employment into well-being and family life. “My mental health has changed because I have a clear plan now,” one mother reflected. Another shared, “My stress levels are lower, my mood is a lot calmer. Mothers began making time for self-care, journaling, exercise, and meditation. Healthier moms meant happier children. “I learned how to be a gentle parent. That makes my house feel calmer,” one mother said. Family outings, sports, and shared experiences strengthened bonds. “I was able to take my kids out more, do different things, amusement parks, museums,” one mother explained.”

Through it all, Martha’s Table created space for growth and belonging. Participants described the environment as caring and responsive. “What impressed me most was their effort to tailor programs to our needs and connect us with resources for finances, credit, or mental health,” one mother said. Now, as the program enters its final year, the results speak for themselves. Families are more stable, mothers are more confident, and communities are stronger. The lessons will last long after the final meeting. One mother best captured it: “I feel way more confident than I did when I first joined the program. I know that I’m capable of saving and building wealth.”

“The bottom line is that research across the country and around the world shows that cash transfer programs work. The Strong Families, Strong Futures program demonstrates what happens when families are truly supported: mothers gain financial stability, emotional well-being, career growth, health, and stronger connections to their communities.”  – Tiffany Williams, President and CEO of Martha’s Table

We’re grateful to DC’s Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development for partnering with us to support mothers in creating stable, secure home environments, and to all of our partners and supporters who make this work possible.
