Honoring Strength, Connection, and Culture: Strong African American Families Program
This spring, Martha’s Table proudly hosted the inaugural cohort of the Strong African American Families (SAAF) program. Grounded in cultural celebration and the wisdom of Black families, SAAF brings together parents and caregivers of youth ages 10 to 14 to deepen communication, strengthen family bonds, and elevate shared values.
One of the most powerful aspects of SAAF is how it brings caregivers and children together to spend time and truly see each other. Parents come to understand their children’s perspectives in new ways, and our youth begin to see their caregivers not simply as authority figures but as trusted partners.
“We saw families laughing, listening, and learning side by side,” said Angela Draughn, Martha’s Table Family Success Center Manager. “There were moments when a parent and child would reflect together and agree on how they each bring strength to the relationship. That kind of connection is transformative.”
The meaningful and joyful program creates space for authentic conversations, playful engagement, and activities that strengthen bonds. It is a place where families grow closer and walk away with a renewed sense of unity and trust.
A Program Rooted in Culture, Community, and Joy
Over seven weeks, participants engaged in interactive sessions celebrating African American identity and tradition while gaining practical tools for parenting during the tween and teen years. From discussions about setting expectations to joyful family dinners and shared storytelling, SAAF created a space for families to connect in authentic ways.
One activity in the program invited families to create their family creed, something meaningful they could come back to again and again. One parent shared how much that moment has stayed with them:
“One of my favorite parts was the family creed. We talk about it all the time, holding ourselves together. We recite it and really reflect on it.”
What started as a simple exercise became a meaningful way for the family to reconnect and remind them they’re on the same team.
SAAF is more than just a curriculum; it’s a celebration of family strength, purpose, and the power that comes from being a family.
