Dignity, One Outfit at a Time: Martha’s Outfitters and National Clothing Insecurity Day

A perfect-fitting jacket. A pair of shoes that feel like they were made for you. An outfit that has you walking into a job interview, a classroom, or a doctor’s office feeling like your best self. Clothes do that, and that kind of confidence should be available to everyone. On National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day (NCIAD), observed on September 15, we’re celebrating the DC neighbors who shop, volunteer, and donate to Martha’s Outfitters. 

Why This Day Matters

A parent sending a child to school in shoes that actually fit. A job seeker walking into an interview feeling sharp and ready. A family with a little extra breathing room in the budget because clothing is one need already taken care of. These are the everyday wins we get to celebrate, made possible by reliable access to well-fitting, seasonally appropriate clothing, the idea at the heart of NCIAD.

NCIAD was founded in 2025 by Note in the Pocket, a Durham, NC clothing nonprofit that has clothed more than 71,400 people since 2013. Their work, and the growing number of organizations marking this day alongside them, is a great reminder of just how much a nationwide community of generous neighbors can accomplish together. At Martha’s Table, we get to live that out every day through Martha’s Outfitters.

Martha’s Outfitters: A No-Cost Clothing Boutique in Southeast DC

Martha’s Outfitters is our no-cost, community clothing boutique at 2204 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE in Ward 8. DC residents join with a valid photo ID and proof of residency. Once they join, they can shop a curated collection of clothing for children, adults, and families. 

Membership runs on a monthly clothing credit: neighbors in the 20020 zip code enjoy of $40 a month through our Classic Membership, and residents outside of that area get $20 a month through our Select Membership. Every membership card also includes shopping at our Martha’s Table Markets, so the perks go well beyond the boutique. 

Members get to choose the pieces that fit their style, their size, and their life, the same fun experience anyone would expect at a boutique anywhere in the city. For job seekers preparing for an interview, parents outfitting growing kids, or anyone refreshing their wardrobe, that choice fuels real workforce readiness and economic mobility, plus a closet they feel great about.

The Impact, By The Numbers

In the past year alone, we were thrilled to distribute more than 97,000 articles of clothing through Martha’s Outfitters, delivering an estimated $2.9 million in value that households could put toward rent, groceries, and the things that make life good, up from 89,932 pieces the year before and counting!

Behind every one of those numbers is a neighbor: a child starting the school year with clothes that fit, a parent walking into a job interview with confidence, a family with more breathing room in their budget.

“Our team continues to enjoy the time we spend with our volunteers, who bring new energy to our boutique every day and help support the community we serve with kindness and fun,” says Laura Grossman, Martha’s Outfitters Program Manager.

Take Action This National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day

Martha’s Outfitters runs on community generosity year-round, and National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day is the perfect moment for us to invite you in on the fun:

Donate clothing: Drop off new or gently used items for all ages and sizes, including children’s clothing and professional attire, or schedule a no-cost home pickup through our B-Thrifty “Project B-Green” partnership. Every donation feeds our clothing donation program for DC families.

Host a clothing drive: Rally your office, school, faith group, or neighborhood to collect clothing together, then challenge another team or a friend to see who can collect the most. 

Volunteer: Join our volunteer clothing boutique team to sort donations or help shoppers find what they need at volunteer.marthastable.org. (Ask about our new sorting bingo game: volunteers say it makes the work even more fun.)

National Clothing Insecurity Awareness Day is just one celebration for us, because the good feeling of being wrapped up warm doesn’t stop in September. Mark your calendar for our Winter Coat Giveaway on Saturday, October 24, as we aim to put 3,000 coats into the hands of DC neighbors ready to greet the season ahead.
