District Dad’s Men’s Fashion Showcase: A Celebration of Community and Style

Setting the Stage: An Electrifying Event

This past weekend marked a historic moment for our community as we held our District Dads Men’s Fashion Showcase. The air was thick with excitement as men from our District Dads program took to the runway, showcasing fashion, style, and the vibrant spirit of our community. From the first stride to the final pose, the energy in the room was palpable, reminding us all of the strength and creativity within us. The entire event was a true celebration. It featured live performances by Distrist Dads alumni and artist Vondre “VonDre” Walston, a dance break by local legend Mr. Hollywood, and Community Development Manager Keith Keys, who had the crowd laughing hysterically with his witty humor and captivating style. Fashion with a Purpose: Beyond the Clothes

The showcase wasn’t just a display of stylish menswear; it served a higher purpose. The event featured four unique runways, designed by Fashion Curator Rian Ashlee, including: 

• The Art of Leisure
• The Modern Trail Blazer 
• Ward 8 Heritage 
• and The Executive Gentleman

Each look was curated from our very own no-cost clothing boutique, Martha’s Outfitters, which plays a crucial role in our community.

As Matt emphasized, “Clothing is not just fabric; it’s a form of expression. It represents who we are.” The showcase illuminated the stories behind the clothes, instilling a sense of pride in those who wore them. Attendees witnessed firsthand how every outfit was more than just a style choice; it was a reflection of our rich community heritage and aspirations.

“The clothes tonight come from our very own community,” he shared. “You don’t have to break the bank to look good. You can create your swag from what’s available to you.”

Voices of the Community

Beyond the runway, the event offered a space for conversations to foster change. Attendees like longtime volunteer and neighbor Andre Brooks mentioned,

“There’s no shame in shopping here. This is a space where we can redefine what it means to be a man in our community.”

Echoing this sentiment, Director of Community Development Charlie Gussom added, “Clothing is art; it’s culture. It’s an expression of who we are.” Each voice contributed to the chorus of empowerment that resonated throughout the evening, encouraging others to embrace their identity and uplift one another.  Charlie even included his own clothing brand in the show @blackpawngame and had the opportunity to share its deeper meaning, “that anybody can come from trial to triumph to become anything they set their mind to.
