April is one of my favorite months of the year. It’s Volunteer Appreciation Month, a time to celebrate the incredible people who make our work possible.
At Martha’s Table, volunteers are at the core of everything we do. I get to see that impact up close every single day. I remember a boy and his mom showing up to volunteer with us at a Joyful Food Market, and they told me that he had actually been in our Early Childhood Education program! It was a full-circle moment that showed me just how deep the roots of our Martha’s Table community go.
From our no-cost markets to our clothing boutique and programs across Washington, DC, our volunteers show up with care, consistency, and a true commitment to their neighbors.
One of the most inspiring things about our volunteer community is its dependability.
Every day, 40 to 70 volunteers show up to support our work. They greet neighbors, distribute fresh produce, organize clothing, and help create spaces where people feel welcomed and respected.
These moments may seem small, but together, they create something powerful.
Last year alone:
That’s 28,000 hours of connection, care, and community building supporting over 45,000+ neighbors a year.
In my role, I connect people to opportunities to give back to the community that matters most to them. But I also get to see how our volunteers shape the experience for every single person who walks through our doors.
Volunteers bring warmth into our spaces. They create moments of connection. They help ensure that every neighbor feels seen, supported, and valued.
Because of them, we are able to support strong children, strong families, and strong communities across DC.
Volunteer Appreciation Month is not only a time to say thank you, but it’s also a time to get involved.
If you’ve been thinking about volunteering, this is a great time to start.
Our Volunteer Engagement team is here to help you every step of the way!
To every volunteer who has supported Martha’s Table, thank you. Thank you for your time, your energy, and your heart. Thank you for choosing to show up for your community. You are at the core of our work, and I am so grateful to be part of this community with you!
Happy Volunteer Appreciation Month from all of us at Martha’s Table!
