This year, Martha’s Table turns 45, and it’s hard not to smile thinking about the thousands of moments, big and small, that have made this organization such a beloved part of Washington, DC. This month, there’s even more to celebrate: our President and CEO, Tiffany Williams, was recently named Nonprofit Leader of the Year by the Washington Business Journal and will be formally honored at their awards celebration in December, a joyful recognition for a leader whose warmth and vision have touched so many lives. Under her leadership, Martha’s Table continues to deliver high-quality education, access to health and wellness resources, family support, and community investments to more than 45,000 residents each year.
When you sit down with Tiffany, her stories are filled with laughter, gratitude, and an unshakeable belief in the power of community. As she reflected on Martha’s Table’s journey, it was clear: our story is really about people coming together, rolling up their sleeves, and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their zip code, can thrive.
From her very first days at Martha’s Table, Tiffany Williams has been integral to dreaming up a new future for the organization. With more than 30 years of experience as a dynamic education and nonprofit leader, and over a decade in key leadership roles here, including most recently serving as interim chief executive officer before being appointed President and CEO in December 2022, Tiffany’s vision has shaped the welcoming, intentional spaces that define The Commons. “We wanted The Commons to feel like a home away from home,” she recalls. Every day, you’ll find neighbors celebrating birthdays, sharing coffee, or simply connecting in these warm spaces. That sense of belonging is what makes Martha’s Table special: it’s not just a place to get support, it’s a place to be seen, valued, and embraced just as you are.
Some of the most touching memories come from moments of pure dedication: team members sleeping in the old building during snowstorms to make sure meals went out for McKenna’s Wagon, or opening new doors not for VIPs, but for the very community members who helped shape the organization. “At the center of our work are the neighbors we stand alongside,” Tiffany says. That’s a promise you can feel the moment you step through our doors.
Martha’s Table’s impact has always been about listening and evolving. Programs like Art as Healing and Emotional Wellness grew because neighbors said, “This matters to us.” That’s how change happens here: friendships deepen, new faces become familiar, and neighbors bring their friends along, creating a true sense of community.
Even during tough times like the challenges of COVID-19, our volunteers and staff stood strong, side by side. Some have given decades of service, others just a day, but all bring the same spirit: compassion, teamwork, and a desire to lift each other up. “Our volunteers are part of our heartbeat,” Tiffany likes to say, and it’s true. Their kindness and commitment are what keep us going.
When Tiffany talks about her work, you hear humility and purpose in every word. Winning Nonprofit Leader of the Year isn’t just a personal achievement; it’s a celebration of everyone who pours their heart into Martha’s Table. “I know that being at Martha’s Table is a higher calling,” she says. “My focus has always been on what I was brought here to do.” Her leadership is about nurturing the organization’s spirit so that it can continue to shine for years to come, even beyond her own tenure.
This commitment has inspired gratitude from former CEOs, board members, and friends across DC, but Tiffany’s proudest moments are the ones where the mission lives on, as neighbors, staff, and volunteers come together to ensure Martha’s Table feels like family, no matter who leads the organization.
With Giving Tuesday on the horizon, Tiffany’s message is clear: what makes Martha’s Table different is the way we honor every neighbor’s humanity and dignity. A visit here isn’t just about accessing healthy food; it’s about becoming a part of a community filled with hope and joy. “When you give to Martha’s Table, you can trust that your gift is helping someone feel valued and respected,” she says. It’s about making sure everyone walks away with their head held high.
After 45 years, we’re still here listening, adapting, and lifting up our community together. Tiffany dreams of a future where every family has what they need, and organizations like Martha’s Table are no longer needed. Until then, her heart is full of gratitude: “There’s no way we do this work alone. It takes all of us team members, volunteers, donors, neighbors, friends.”
As we celebrate this milestone, we invite you to be part of our story, whether you volunteer, give, or simply share a smile. Here’s to 45 years of meeting the moment, hand in hand, and to all the beautiful moments still to come.
