Families First: How Parent Leadership Drives Our ECE Program

At the heart of our Early Childhood Education (ECE) program is the belief that strong communities are built together. We celebrate families with events like parent appreciation breakfasts and, most importantly, through the Parent Policy Council. Our Parent Policy Council is the cornerstone of our family engagement. This leadership group encourages caregivers to actively shape our programming and represent the interests of children and families across the organization, providing a formal structure for collaboration that allows parents and community representatives to participate meaningfully in decisions that shape the mission and daily operations of our ECE programs.

Every voice matters, and every perspective helps guide our path forward, providing an enriching space for our growing children and their caregivers. This year,  Ms. Linda Thompson serves as the Chair of the Parent Policy Council, which also means being an active member of the Board of Directors; furthering our commitment to authentic, community-led decision-making.

Parent-Led and Designed Programming

Ms. Linda shares her positive experience serving on the Parent Policy Council. She describes how the council creates a welcoming space for parents to share ideas, address concerns, and celebrate successes together.

“I love Martha’s Table. Here, your suggestions are taken seriously as a parent, and you don’t get that kind of treatment elsewhere.”

As chairperson, she serves as a liaison between families and the program. Parents can bring feedback, ideas, and suggestions directly to her, knowing their voices are truly valued.  Initiatives created based on parent suggestions:

  • Parent Power Hour meetings: Ms. Linda sought to build connections amongst her fellow parents. At her suggestion, ECE teachers introduced a bi-weekly session for parents to get together and connect with one another. There is strength and love in a community that comes together.
  • Resource booklets: As a parent, it can be challenging to locate or keep track of all the resources one may need. Members of the parent policy group suggested creating a booklet to serve as a one-stop resource for all essential information.
  • Family outings: The annual pumpkin patch received a fun new addition. Ms. Linda suggested a field trip to an actual pumpkin patch, believing it would enhance the experience for children and families. This successful new outing was introduced, fostering a continued sense of community and fun among our families.

These programs are proof that our approach is shaped by those who know our children best: their families.
