From Kindergarten to Community Leadership
Sherron Murphy-Brown brings a deep understanding of what children, families, and educators need to thrive. Her journey began 25 years ago in a New York City kindergarten classroom, where she first saw the profound impact of access and opportunity in shaping a child’s path.
That experience sparked a lasting commitment to education and the “magical years” from birth to five, a critical window when the architecture of the brain is formed, and every experience helps shape who a child becomes.
Now leading early childhood education and older youth programming at Martha’s Table, Murphy-Brown’s work is grounded in purpose and connection. “With the right support and environment, educators can truly show up at their best,” she shared. “And when that happens, it creates stronger experiences for children and families.”
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We recognize that children thrive when their families are supported alongside them. That’s why our efforts extend far beyond the classroom, with a place-based approach that ensures we remain a consistent, reliable presence in the neighborhood.
“This work is about seeing the whole picture,” Murphy-Brown explained. “What does the family need? How are we supporting them so they can support their child?”
Through dedicated family engagement, personalized check-ins, and access to organization-wide resources, including nutrition support, wellness programs, and community events, we help parents and caregivers become strong leaders in their families and advocates for their children.
“The Week of the Young Child is a time to celebrate early childhood education, but also to advocate,” Murphy-Brown said. “To use our strength as a community to continue providing access and opportunity for every child and family we support.”
From Educator Support to Family Flourishing
Supporting children also means supporting the educators who care for them. Since joining Martha’s Table, Murphy-Brown has made intentional investments in the educator experience, including structured professional development, expanding spaces for teachers’ voices to be heard, and a stronger culture of collaboration.
Creating stability and continuity allows educators to plan with intention, grow in their roles, and show up fully for their students. The result is a more connected, confident team aligned on both purpose and practice.
“One of the most meaningful shifts has been the growing sense of community across the education team,” Murphy-Brown shared. “It’s about collaboration – sharing ideas, reflecting together, and building something collectively.” That same spirit extends to families, ensuring every interaction builds trust and connection.
Ultimately, the success of this holistic approach is clearest in the daily moments in our classrooms, playground and hallways. It shows up in children’s bright laughter, their boundless curiosity, and the excitement they bring to every new discovery. That same energy is reflected in the parents, whose joyful engagement and positive outlook strengthen the entire community, confirming that when families feel seen and supported, their children will flourish.
