As families across Washington, DC face challenges related to rising food prices and economic uncertainties, Martha’s Table is stepping up to ensure no one has to navigate uncertainty alone. Our daily, no-cost markets in both Northwest and Southeast DC provide a reliable source of fresh, nutritious food and a welcoming space for connection, wellness, and support.
Fresh food isn’t a luxury; it’s a basic right, and today, more than ever, families in Washington, DC, are being forced to choose between paying a bill and putting a nutritious meal on the table.
Last year, we distributed over 2.2 million meals, a 23% increase from the prior year and a 49.7% increase in just two years.
Our daily, no-cost, choice-based markets are welcoming hubs of community, connection, dignity, and wellness where our neighbors can choose the foods that are best for their families. Currently, we welcome hundreds of shoppers every day.
For shoppers like Jazmon and Rochelle, the markets offer much-needed relief. Jazmon recently found out about the market after experiencing job loss, shared her gratitude: “I was grateful. I live in Ward 7, and there aren’t many places where you can find fresh produce and vegetables. The staff and everyone were just really friendly and welcoming.”
Jazmon also describes the market as “being able to have a place to offset some of your expenses, to make your paycheck stretch a little longer.” Rochelle agrees, adding, “It’s very helpful for us, you know, in the community, because we really don’t have a lot of resources.”
To our supporters, Jazmon has this message: “You may not see the direct impact of where your money is going, but know that it is helping people… you’re planting a seed that you hope you will never need to pick fruit from, but, if you needed that fruit, you know that the seed is planted.”
Martha’s Table posts 15,000 volunteer slots every year, and we invite you to discover what it’s like to be part of our volunteer community! No effort goes unnoticed, no amount is too small, and every minute counts.
As the year comes to a close, consider committing to volunteering, hosting an in-kind clothing drive, or making a gift to Martha’s Table – and thank you for being a part of the Martha’s Table family.
