Dreams on the Move: Global Passport in NYC

Earlier this month, teens from Ward 8 hit the streets of New York City with our Global Passport program for an unforgettable adventure packed with culture, connection, service, and nonstop energy. From the bright lights of Times Square to the magic of Broadway, the teens soaked in some of the city’s most iconic sights, tried new experiences, and made memories with friends old and new.

Each Global Passport experience brings teens from Ward 8 together with Martha’s Table team members and community ambassadors who serve as chaperones and mentors, keeping the group safe, supported, and energized throughout the day. Johanna Williams, Deputy Chief of Staff at Martha’s Table and a proud New Yorker, joined the adventure, capturing moments and helping students dive into everything the city had to offer. Seeing the teens fully embrace the city’s sights, sounds, and energy was a particular highlight for her.

“What I really enjoyed was watching the kids just take it all in,” Johanna said. “Times Square was incredible. The lights, the energy, their faces lighting up. They loved every minute!”

From visiting Times Square, Harlem, Hunter College, and the United Nations to experiencing Wicked on Broadway, every part of the trip was packed with energy, discovery, and connection. Teens moved through the city together like true New Yorkers, riding the subway, exploring neighborhoods, and sharing laughs along the way. They toured college campuses, gave back through community service, and soaked in iconic sights from Radio City Music Hall to Melba’s in Harlem.

“They supported each other,” Johanna reflected. “Some of them didn’t even know one another before this trip, but it was like, ‘Come on, hang with me.’ That was really nice to see.

“Some of the teens are in a band back home, and they started playing their drums on the train,” Johanna laughed. “In New York, you’ve got singers, dancers, acrobats, and drummers. They fit right in.”

A big part of the trip included a hands-on service experience at Part of the Solution (POTS) in the Bronx. This was the second time Global Passport partnered with POTS, it was the first time for these teens, who jumped in with energy and teamwork. They saw firsthand how even small actions can make a big difference and experienced the joy of giving back while stepping into their roles as engaged global citizens.

Global Passport is not just about travel. It is about building community, exploring new opportunities, and giving teens a space to dream bigger. With supportive chaperones, dedicated team members, and a group of engaged peers, participants were able to step outside their neighborhoods, experience the world, and return with new perspectives, skills, and confidence.

“We couldn’t offer these incredible learning opportunities without the dedication of our community mentors and the Martha’s Table staff,” said Youth Development Manager Rachel Angle. “Their passion and care make it possible for Ward 8 youth to explore, grow, and experience opportunities they might never otherwise have.”

Looking ahead, Global Passport is excited to continue providing life-changing experiences. Upcoming trips will take students to new destinations where they can continue to explore, learn, and grow.

It’s inspiring to see how the Global Passport program gives teens from Ward 8 such meaningful exposure to the world beyond their neighborhood. This New York City trip sounds like more than just sightseeing — it’s a chance for these students to grow, build confidence, and experience cultural connection firsthand. The blend of exploration, mentorship, and service really reflects Martha’s Table’s commitment to empowerment through experience. Seeing leaders like Johanna Williams guide and share her own love for the city must have made it even more memorable. Programs like this show how travel can truly expand perspectives and plant seeds for lifelong ambition.
