Back to School, Back to Family: Celebrating Our Alumni

Earlier this week, we welcomed alumni of our Early Childhood Education programs and their families back for an Alumni Back-to-School Mixer.

Martha’s Table buzzed with excitement and laughter. Children proudly selected new backpacks and school supplies, and families gathered to share a meal, enjoying both the food and the chance to reconnect with old friends. Around the room, neighbors enjoyed cotton candy, face painting, and lively music that filled the space with energy and joy. Colorful back-to-school decorations brightened every corner, creating an atmosphere of celebration and connection. 

This was more than just a back-to-school event; it was a heartfelt community gathering, a chance for families to come together, share memories, and make new ones as they prepared for the year ahead.

One alum, Chance, lit up the moment he spotted his former teacher, Cara Wilner. With a huge smile, he eagerly shared stories about his new school and proudly mentioned that he had already met his 4th-grade teacher for the coming year. When asked about his favorite memory at Martha’s Table, he didn’t hesitate:

“Growing strawberries in the garden and getting to eat them.” -Chance, ECE Alumni

He added that walking back into the building felt like stepping into a place filled with memories.

A big thank you to Assured Consulting Solutions for generously donating backpacks filled with school supplies! We’re also grateful to our incredible Early Childhood Education team, who worked tirelessly to make every detail of the event just right—from arranging vibrant back-to-school decorations to setting up resource tables where families could explore opportunities like the Dietra L. Ford Children’s Savings Account Program, which gives children enrolled for one year in Martha’s Table’s early childhood education program a $1,000 seed investment, which families can continue to grow for their child’s future.

We also extend our thanks to partners from DC Greens, the Children’s Museum, and others who joined us to share valuable resources, as well as to the generous donors who contributed supplies from our Wish List. Finally, a special shout-out to our amazing volunteers who helped with setup, served food, and handled cleanup—your time and energy made the celebration truly joyful and memorable for the entire community.

Being part of the Martha’s Table family extends well beyond preschool graduation. Back-to-School Night was a reminder that families can always come back to connect, explore new programs, and know they will always have a home here.
