Walk With Us and Tell Us Why

Consider this…

More than 37% of households with children in Washington, D.C. reported in 2009-2010 not having enough money to buy the food, according to a new analysis of food hardship data

Among states, DC has the highest food hardship rate among households with children.

According to the 2011 U.S. Census Bureau report, 17.6% of DC Residents are living at or below the poverty line.

Know that we do this…

Martha’s Table’s transforms lives by engaging the community in developing sustainable solutions to poverty. We meet the core needs of our clients with education, nutrition, clothing and family support programs that prepare young people, from infancy through adulthood, for a promising future.

Today, you can do your part to ensure that we are able to continue providing these sustainable solutions in our community by participating in the Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Program.

You can help us raise funds in just a few easy steps:

Walk with us on Saturday, November 3rd at 2 pm —>

Visit and register YOUR OWN community walk/activity for Martha’s Table!  A walk must be registered two weeks prior to the walk and no later than Friday, October 19th; all walks must be completed no later than Sunday, November 4th.

Can you believe it!  Your activity does not actually need to be a walk. It can be a volunteer project, a board game event, a Frisbee tournament, a happy hour, or whatever else you’d like it to be! This is an opportunity to get creative and put together a great team building activity!  It must contain an education activity/program.  See #5 below to arrange for a presentation.

Set a fundraising goal for your activity. (100% of online registrations go to Martha’s Table.)

Get the word out to friends, co-workers, family members and the rest of your community to get them to register to help you reach your goal. (Have friends who can’t make it to your event? They can register as virtual walkers and can participate with the click of a mouse!)

E-mail Kim Lyons, to let Martha’s Table know about your walk! We’ll ensure that a staff member is present at your walk to conduct an educational presentation about homelessness for your group.

Have fun and tell us why you are walking! Here is my personal page on “Why I Walk“.  Supporting a good cause is a great way to get a group of people together!

If you have any questions or comments, please email Kim Lyons, Assistant Director of Development at

Why I Walk…

I have worked for Martha’s Table for 5 years.  I have coordinated the Help the Homeless program for 4 years and every year I am astonished by the amount of energy and enthusiasm in the community.  This is the only central fundraising and awareness raising campaign around homelessness and poverty DC and the participation of the community is vital.  This campaign makes a huge difference for Martha’s Table and is essential for us as we continue to provide quality programs to the community.  Please help me help the homeless and donate today!  You simply donate or register as a VIRTUAL WALKER and walk yourself at  Either way, you are supporting a quality driven organization near and dear to my heart.
