Summer Markets are Back!
Our free summer Joyful Food Markets are back starting this June! Popping up at five locations on a biweekly basis, these markets are free and open to the public. Come pay us a visit for no-cost food, including plenty of fresh produce, hands-on cooking activities, and community resources. Go green and don’t forget to bring a reusable bag!
With our partners at the Capital Area Food Bank, DC Health, and 39 elementary schools across Wards 7 and 8, our popular Joyful Food Markets “pop up” monthly in elementary schools during the academic year, reaching thousands of families with healthy food access and education. We decided to expand these markets through the summer–and open them up to the whole community–to meet the need for access to fresh food during June, July, and August.
Summer should be a time for children to explore, learn, and have fun. But during the summer months, thousands of D.C. children lose access to the free meals they receive through their schools, and it’s hard to have fun on an empty stomach. That’s why these markets are so important. We’re especially grateful this summer to partner with the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation, ServeDC, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, D.C. WIC, Mary’s Center, and Rocketship Legacy Prep to make sure children and families have access to fresh, healthy groceries at no-cost.
