Giving…it’s as easy as pie!

For Sheila and Mark Whitney, founders of Whitney Cares, this adage is spot on. Each year around the Thanksgiving holiday, the Whitneys orchestrate a grand feat of baking. With a double oven and family participation, they have created up to 250 home-baked pies to give to those in need each year. Martha’s Table is one beneficiary of the delectable treats.

The Whitneys began baking the pies over 20 years ago when they noticed the disparity between their blessings and the need in the greater Washington DC community. They say that it is “Important to remember who you are and where you come from; be thankful for what you have as every day is a blessing!” Ever since, the Whitneys are blessed with the wherewithal to continue baking pies each year to brighten the lives of those in need during the holiday season.

This year, Martha’s Table served 40 of the Whitney’s pies to folks through McKenna’s Wagon, ensuring even the neediest in our city receive some holiday cheer. The Whitney’s story is a true testament to the spirit of giving and the difference that one family can make. Martha’s Table extends a huge thank you to the Whitneys for their delicious pies and the loved served along with them.
