New Mobile Market Launches

On July 1, Martha’s Table and Arcadia Foods launched a new weekly mobile farmer’s market that offers  a combination of free and for-sale produce and groceries to low-income families across the Metro D.C. area.

Through this partnership, a bright, green truck full of fresh produce, proteins, and healthy diet staples is setting up pop-up farmer’s markets Monday through Friday, twice each day, in eight neighborhoods currently receiving food support from Martha’s Table.

We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all of our donors whose generous support made launching this summer mobile market possible. You are helping us combat hunger and promote healthy food choices for thousands of our neighbors – thank you!

The mobile market launches on Thursday, July 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Hendley Elementary School, located at 425 Chesapeake St. SE, Washington, D.C.  Sam Kass, Executive Director of the White House’s Let’s Move initiative, will begin the formal program with remarks at 4:15 p.m. Patty Stonesifer, President and CEO of Martha’s Table, and Michael Babin, Chairman of Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food and Agriculture, also will speak and be on hand for the event.

ABOUT THE SUMMER MOBILE MARKET

During the school year, Martha’s Table serves thousands of families through our “Martha’s Market” choice grocery program set up in eight local elementary schools. These markets serve each school one time per month, bringing free groceries and the opportunity for children and parents to fill their shopping bags with a variety of fresh produce and shelf-stable foods – all while enjoying cooking demonstrations, tastings, and information tables!

Now, in partnership with Arcadia Foods, Martha’s Table has expanded our food and nutrition program with the launch of a weekly mobile market program, which will provide reliable access to healthy groceries for families in eight locations throughout the summer – when children lose access to free and reduced-price meals at school. The Martha’s Table/Arcadia Mobile Market is now serving each of the eight locations one time each week.

Families with children enrolled in the schools served by Martha’s Table receive free groceries at the mobile market any one market day of their choosing per month. Complimentary groceries include a selection of Martha’s Table non-perishable staple items along with $10 worth of produce and one dozen farm-fresh eggs. The rest of the month, these families receive a 5% discount on any groceries they purchase at the market.

The Martha’s Table/Arcadia Mobile Market accepts Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); Women, Infants and Children (WIC); and Medicaid.  Low-income families can double the value of their produce purchase when they use SNAP or WIC cards.  Also, those using WIC, Medicaid and SNAP cards can receive an additional $10 worth of produce, free of charge, each week at any participating farmer’s market in the country, including the new Martha’s Table/Arcadia Mobile Market.

The mobile markets, which are intentionally located in food deserts, are also open to the general public to purchase fresh produce at affordable prices.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

During the summer, family food budgets can increase by as much as $300 per month when children are no longer in school to receive free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch. All eight elementary schools that host our Martha’s Markets have at least 75% of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. By launching this mobile market with Arcadia Foods, Martha’s Table is ensuring that families who depend on our food support throughout the school year continue to have access to good, healthy food during the summer months.
