Family Literacy Night at Martha’s Table was an absolute blast! Complete with games, book giveaways, and even a celebrity appearance, all in attendance had a great time celebrating the joys of literacy. Check out some scenes from the night below:
A Healthy Start student flashes his stack of “Literacy Bucks” while waiting to collect some brand new books. In the weeks leading up to the event, Martha’s Table staff gave out “Literacy Bucks” to students who displayed good behavior. The students cashed in their Bucks at Family Literacy Night for new books donated from our Amazon Wish List and partner organizations.
Parents got a kick out of redeeming Literacy Bucks for new books to read with their children. Fun fact: the most donated book from our Amazon Wish List was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett.
Young students demonstrate how literature can make you feel a range of emotions.
The middle school students in our Healthy Connections after-school program exhibited their series of paintings entitled “Youth In Protest: Past, Present, and Future.” Here, they present their hopes for a future in which people of all colors and races are united in their shared humanity.
Bzzzz! Instructor John Cahill (Mr. John) plays a round of the literacy-inspired Family Feud game that he created with parents and children. In this picture, families learn about ways to encourage their children to read on the go and out shopping.
We wrapped up the night with a special appearance from retired U.S. Women’s National Team soccer player and D.C. resident Lori Lindsey, who read Peanut Butter & Cupcake by Terry Border to some of our youngest students in the Healthy Start Program. Thanks for stopping by, Lightning!
