MT’s Virtual Fitness Classes: Prioritizing Health in the Pandemic

This February, Martha’s Table is stepping up and celebrating American Heart Month with weekly fitness classes open to all of our neighbors.

On Monday, get moving with a 10:00 am class that focuses on full-body movement. Tuesday night at 7:00 pm, join Misha for a high-energy jazz funk class. Step into fitness with the whole family on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm for an all-ages workout focused on bringing families together to learn stepping basics. Thursday night offers a 6:30 pm yoga class that invites neighbors to come together around intentional movement and connection of body, mind, and spirit. Finish the week strong with a 6:00 pm virtual HIIT, Compound, and Functional training with WEFITDC!

Studies show that just 30 minutes of physical activity can help to reduce the rise of stroke, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. Now more than ever, we know that it is so important to prioritize the health of our community!

“The classes started during the pandemic to give folks another way to stay fit and stay healthy,” shared Erica Janifer, Martha’s Table’s Community Events and Partnerships Coordinator. “There’s been full-body workouts, jazz, tap, yoga, and even senior fitness classes!

At Martha’s Table, our team knows just how important it is to support healthy living, especially as we’re all trying to stay safe during COVID-19. While we stay socially distanced, it can be hard to find ways to stay active and motivated. Our weekly fitness classes make it easy!

Tierra Briscoe, who leads weekly yoga classes shared, “For a lot of people who don’t practice yoga, they’re learning how to become more comfortable in their practice, getting creative with it in their homes. You can get just as innovative and creative in the comfort of your own home!”

“Teaching brings me joy not only for their benefit but for my benefit as well. Having this opportunity to inspire the youth in a different way has been an unbelievable experience.”

Erica added, “The instructors love the opportunity to be able to work during the pandemic — a lot of them haven’t been able to host in-person classes. This lets them do the trainings and build out their base with folks they normally wouldn’t be able to reach!”

Once participants register for a class, they join one of D.C.’s top fitness trainers for a Zoom workout, all from the comfort of their own home. As many of our neighbors have found, staying active without the support of in-person classes and instructors can be tough, which is why we know it’s so important to come together (virtually) and support each other’s fitness goals!

“Last Tuesday, a parent reached out to me via Instagram and explained their daughter’s appreciation and love for my class,” Misha, our Tuesday night Jazz instructor shared.

“Teaching brings me joy not only for their benefit but for my benefit as well. Having this opportunity to inspire the youth in a different way has been an unbelievable experience.”

For neighbors who aren’t able to join live, Martha’s Table even offers a handful of pre-recorded workout sessions that participants can follow along with at their own pace.

We can’t wait to see you in an upcoming, heart-pumping workout!
