Marking the Moment: Celebrating Progress, Partnership, and the Power of Collaboration in Early Childhood Education

On May 31, we will gather at Martha’s Table to celebrate the achievements of early childhood educators and the impact of a three-year partnership to strengthen early childhood education in Washington, DC. The Advancing Early Education Collaborative (AEEC) began in 2022 with support from JPMorgan Chase to address the shortage of early childhood educators and create new pathways to opportunity.

The AEEC brought together four organizations with a shared mission: American University, LIFT-DC, Martha’s Table, and Trinity Washington University. Together, they built a program that combined academic support, credential opportunities, and wraparound services to support early childhood professionals.

Since its launch, AEEC has supported 362 students, resulting in:

  • 74 early childhood education credentials earned
  • 36 Bachelor’s degrees and 38 Associate’s degrees awarded through Trinity Washington University
  • 28 students completed CDA coursework through American University.

Success in education often depends on more than what happens in the classroom. That’s why the Advancing Early Education Collaborative prioritized holistic support to meet students where they are. Through this effort, students received the resources and stability they needed to stay on track and move forward with confidence.

Participants received extensive support to remove barriers to success. Through Martha’s Table, students accessed healthy groceries valued at over $7,500 by visiting the organization’s no-cost, choice-based markets 114 times and receiving additional supplemental support over 50 times. They also received support to purchase professional clothing, securing more than $14,000 worth of professional attire to support career readiness. Additional resources included the distribution of 28 laptops, $49,500 in childcare stipends, and over $8,000 in transportation assistance. LIFT-DC provided personalized financial coaching to 60 students and issued quarterly cash transfers to 40 participants, helping students make meaningful progress toward their career goals.

Together, these services created a strong foundation that allowed students to show up, stay engaged, and succeed.

“AEEC has been an incredible source of support throughout my educational journey. As a student at Trinity Washington University and an assistant teacher at Martha’s Table, I’ve had the privilege of participating in this program for the past two years.

AEEC provided me with a clear and supportive academic pathway that has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Through this partnership, I received access to invaluable resources, including mentorship, group sessions focused on self-awareness, and dedicated career guidance to help us successfully navigate college, graduate, and transition into the early learning workforce.” — Natalie Wilson,  Assistant Teacher at Martha’s Table

Although the initial grant period ends in June 2025, partner organizations remain committed to supporting currently enrolled students. Each organization will continue offering services as resources allow, including academic advising, financial coaching, and access to basic needs supports.

The May 31 event is more than a celebration. It is a reminder of what is possible when organizations work together with shared goals and a commitment to the community. This collaboration proved that when we invest in people and meet their needs in a coordinated way, we strengthen systems and create better outcomes for children, families, and educators.

“The Advancing Early Education Collaborative is transforming the early childhood education field by investing in the talents of Black and Latina women, supporting pay equity, skill-building, and long-term career mobility. With generous support from JPMorgan Chase, Martha’s Table and AEEC partners are advancing equity through deep community collaboration. This is not just about filling jobs; it’s about building stronger communities and creating lasting opportunity for early educators and the children they care for.” – David Lloyd, Deputy Director of Economic Mobility

Looking ahead, we know that the challenges facing early childhood education will not disappear overnight. Addressing them will require ongoing collaboration, fresh thinking, and a commitment to building strong, supportive communities. The Advancing Early Education Collaborative has shown what is possible when organizations work together with a shared purpose. By bringing together resources, knowledge, and care, we helped students stay on track and move toward brighter futures.

To the students, thank you for your hard work, dedication, and trust. We are proud to have been part of your journey and excited to celebrate with you on May 31.
