After tending to a line of patrons, Ms. Malik straightens out her collection of bold, eclectic jewelry on the storefront table. She is set up at Martha’s Outfitters in Historic Anacostia, where she often sells her pieces. As a local boutique buyer and artisan, Ms. Malik has an eye for conversation-starting pieces, from delicate gold necklaces to chunky wood earrings. She strives to have “something for everybody.” While stationing her collection in Martha’s Outfitters twice a week has been good for business, she says that the best part of her job is the service she gets to provide to neighbors. “The community really receives me well,” she beams. A pair of young women approaches Ms. Malik’s table, toting affordable dresses they’ve just selected from the racks, and looking for jewelry to match. Luckily, they’ve come to just the right place.
As Martha’s Table gears up for a major expansion into Ward 8 in 2018, our Southeast Outfitters store plays a key role as a community partner and service provider. Visit us in Historic Anacostia to say hello, learn more about our programs, check out our space, and keep an eye out for local artisans like Ms. Malik!

The Global Passport trip was a trip I’ll never forget…I was able to step out of my comfort zone and create new relationships.

What I enjoy most about being a father is just the happiness I feel from giving unconditional love and protection. I love being there for them and hearing them say “That’s my dad” proudly to their friends.
