A New Way to Volunteer

Why Volunteer with Martha’s Table

At Martha’s Table, we know that supporting strong children, strong families, and strong communities starts with people like you. Our mission is deeply rooted in a community-led approach, where we work alongside our neighbors to create impactful programs in education, health and wellness, family engagement, and community support. Each year, we serve thousands of District residents, and volunteers play a key role in making this possible.

Last year, our volunteers contributed nearly 30,000 hours of service, helping us provide daily markets, prepare meals, and run essential wellness programs. Your time and dedication could be the next step in continuing this work. Whether it’s an hour or a few days a month, your involvement makes a real difference. Join us and help our community thrive—one volunteer hour at a time.

Ways to Volunteer

  • Deliver Fresh Meals with McKenna’s Wagon: McKenna’s Wagon is a mobile food service that operates 365 days a year and provides meals to hundreds of DC neighbors experiencing housing instability or hunger.
    • Volunteers are needed every evening to drive to two locations in downtown DC to distribute fresh meals, fruit, and refreshments.
  • Lend a hand at our daily Martha’s Table Markets: Since 1980, food and nutrition have been central to our mission. Martha’s Table Markets continues this commitment by providing a no-cost, farmers market-style shopping experience with convenient access to fresh produce and pantry items. Guests are welcome to shop twice monthly at our no-cost markets located in the lobbies of our SE and NW locations.
    • Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday to help set up and distribute food at the daily Martha’s Table Markets.
  • Bring joy to our Joyful Food Markets: School cafeterias and gymnasiums are transformed into joyful environments with music, dancing, and colorful tables filled with baskets of fresh produce and healthy non-perishable food. In addition, our markets feature kids’ activities and recipe samples designed to get children excited about healthy eating and cooking.
    • Volunteers are needed to support pop-up markets Monday through Friday at more than 53 elementary schools in Wards 7 and 8.
  • Celebrate Healthy Happy Hour: Our Healthy Happy Hour is a key part of our emotional wellness programming. This weekly, joyous event offers complimentary mocktails, snacks, music, and activities such as cooking demonstrations, gardening tips, and emotional wellness workshops designed to support and elevate participants’ overall health and happiness.
    • Volunteers are needed once a week to help set up the healthy happy hour, where we will create delicious mocktails and recipes using some of our garden-grown produce.
  • Support Shoppers at Martha’s Outfitters: Martha’s Outfitters is a community-focused store committed to supporting families. We offer a dignified shopping experience and access to high-quality professional work attire and children’s clothing at no cost to our community members.
    • Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday to help sort through donations, restock the store, and welcome shoppers to Martha’s Outfitters.
