A Generous Donor Makes Hot Wheels Run

03.03.2011

The Sidwell Friends Lower School has donated their time and resources to Martha’s Table for 30 years.  Not only do students and faculty volunteer their time on site, but Sidwell Lower School also chops around 150 pounds of vegetables each week.  Martha’s Table uses these vegetables for the 65 gallons of soup we serve every evening on our mobile soup kitchen, McKenna’s Wagon.

We are a month into our NEW Hot Wheels program, which provides hot, nutritious meals to members of the community on the weekends, instead of the traditional soup and sandwiches we serve 365 days a year.  Despite giving so much already, Sidwell has not stopped there.  Sidwell has reached out by donating 25 casseroles this week.  With so many casseroles, we were able to extend our weekend Hot Wheels program by an extra day, serving hot food on the vans this past Wednesday.

Another regular volunteer group, Gonzaga College High School, volunteers on McKenna’s Wagon every Wednesday. Because of Sidwell’s generosity and willingness to donate something new, they had a chance to work with hot meals for the first time. Thanks to these two special groups, we were able to provide an extra day of hot meals to those in need!
